Charles' George Orwell Links - 10th Anniversary (1995 - 2005)
Charles' George Orwell Links is now 10 years old. Since 1995 this site has grown from a single page of links on GeoCities into a collection of hundreds of documents (representing thousands of pages of text), exclusive images and nearly 200 links to external Orwell web sites.
I'd like to thank all the Orwellians around the world who have contributed to the building of the site — some of you provided content in the form of essays or pictures and others helped with design ideas. I also want to thank all the visitors to the site who have clicked on an ad or made a purchase with Amazon (US, UK, Canada). Your financial support helps cover the monthly web hosting bills.
1995
All that remains of the original GeoCities links page is this animated Orwell graphic that I created as a site logo.
1999
This is what the start page of the Orwell site looked like in 1999. The menu on the left of the screen was constructed using "frames" which caused viewing problems for some visitors with older web browsers. Hosting for the site was moved to CiteNet Telecom in 1997.
2001
The home page is replaced with a non-frames design. An images section is added.
2003
In August 2003 the web site moved to the domain netcharles.com. "The Orwell Web Source" becomes the alternate title for the site. A search function is added as well as exclusive pictures of
Eileen Blair's grave.
2004
The twelve section menu design that has been used since 1997 is reduced to six sections with sub-categories. A built-in translating feature can convert the site pages into several different languages. A large collection of George Orwell's
As I Please newspaper columns are added.
2005
Ten years later.
Charles' George Orwell Links now includes options to increase the text size and bookmark individual pages.
Poems written by Orwell in his youth are added to the site.
